Thermowell

Product Summary

Thermowells play a crucial role in protecting and extending the life of temperature sensors such as thermocouples, thermistors, and bimetallic thermometers from damage caused by excessive pressure, fluid velocity, and corrosion. Additionally, they allow for the replacement of sensors without the need to drain the system, reducing the risk of contamination.

Thermowells designed for high-pressure applications are machined from metal bars to ensure their integrity. Smaller thermowells used in low-pressure environments can be constructed from tubes, with one end closed by welding.

Main Applications:

  • Mining and Energy
  • Water Treatment and Sanitation
  • Oil and Gas
  • Oil Refineries
  • Chemical and Pharmaceutical Industry
  • Food and Beverage Industry
  • Pulp and Paper
  • Steel Industry

Connection Types:

Thermowells can be connected to temperature sensors such as RTDs, thermistors, or thermocouples through different types of connections. Some of the most common ones include threaded connections, welded connections, socket weld, O-Ring, and flanges. ANSI B16.5 flanged thermowells have a double-welded construction to seal both internally and externally, preventing the entry of corrosive substances into the recesses.

Insertion Length:

Insertion length refers to the distance between the connection point of the thermowell and its tip. For maximum accuracy, the insertion length should allow the temperature-sensitive portion of the sensor to extend fully into the medium to be measured. In liquids, the device should be immersed in a length equal to that of the temperature-sensitive portion plus a minimum of one inch. For gases or air, the sensor should be submerged for the length of the temperature-sensitive portion plus an additional three inches. The ideal insertion length varies with the type of sensor used.
